i work for a mental health unit with 2 police officers we deal with people who have drug and mental health issues.
at times over the last 10 years we have "taken down" some large drug affected men, mainly "ice" these days which is epidemic here, and let me tell you even with three of us it is a huge struggle.
sometimes back up is needed or mace spray which is aweful stuff!
I would like to see a non-lethal gun (maybe just an improved taser) replace the sidearms that U.S. cops carry currently.
I'm certainly not against this idea. I'm actually shocked something better hasn't been invented yet.
after a thorough investigation and weighing of the evidence the grand jury has decided not to indict the officer.. the reaction so far seems as predicted - people refuse to accept that the result represents justice despite claims that is what they wanted.. there is now violence and vandalism, including gunshots.
let's hope the police contain the troublemakers.. .
I hate people saying "He was a lovely family guy who loved his friends...gentle giant..." I bet he was but from the footage not on that night.
"He was just an excitable boy. . ." - Warren Zevon

I've worked in some of the poorest, crime and gang-ridden areas of this country (namely Newark NJ).
The first thing I see is the little kids. Toddlers, five year olds - super cute innocent kids!
And I look around and the filith they are surrounded by. . . . and I think to myself: How do they even stand a chance? How can anything good come out of a shithole like this?
And the thing is, they are lots of good people too, people who are just stuck with this shit because they were born into it too.
So, yeah, I do get the societal problem. It is shameful, particularly in the most wealthy country in the world. . . . run by a bunch of folks who largely identify as "Christians." It is absolute bullshit.
But to conflate societal woes with the behavior of an individual who chose to behave in a way that would almost certainly get anyone killed just does not make sense.

People in a given city understand that the streets in the wealthy neighborhood don't have chipped curbs and pot holes. One city but two or more worlds.
I live in one of the wealthiest counties in the US, and our streets SUCK!
Anyway, Madoff should be shot. The damage he did is incredible.
That being said, the fact that Madoff took billions and got away with it without getting shot does not license me to steal.
If I rob a convenience store in my town and assault a cop, I'm pretty well on my way to getting shot to death.

DESIGNS - Ok I was wondering where you were coming from. Made my last comment while you were making yours:
The stock broker who ripped you off for your life savings or the kid who knocks off a liquor store.
Yes, I do see the injustice here, but each individual needs to take reponsibilty for themselves. You gotta worry about you.
I do not feel licensed to rob my local bank beacause some Wall Street asshole did. That's his problem: whether he got shot, imprisoned, or is living the life in the Caymans. That ain't my problem. I'm not robbing the bank.
And as far as I'm concerned, they all should be shot!

The only thing I see is the cops should've been mostly black instead of white. Makes no difference to the end result.
If this is what DESIGNS is hinting about, RAZZIEL got it 100% right.
Let's consider the whole scenario again, but this time it's one of the two "black" cops on our local force of about twenty-ish.
I steal stuff. . . . Confrontation with "black" cop. . . . . Ends up shooting me. Everything same as above.
Again, be honest: Why did this happen? Because the cop was black?
I don't think so, and I'm the dead guy.
Also, reaction from my "mostly white" community because I was shot by a "black" cop (and I am telling you the honest-to-John truth here):
"What in the hell is wrong with that guy? He must be insane! Rob a store, attack a police officer?! That guy was cracked."
They would then order a Mocha Latte.

Try again its there....
After I'm dead, my soul chases after the cop seeking revenge like Patrick Swayze in "Ghost"

Oh yeah - if you're white you wouldn't be on the news or have a riot in your honour
Okay, so right now, if I was shot by the cop, you know what people would do where I live?
They'd say " What in the hell is wrong with that guy? He must be insane! Rob a store, attack a police officer?! That guy was cracked."
They would then order a Mocha Latte.

What do you think you've missed in that scenario.
You're right. I missed this:
I also tried to wrestle the gun away from the officer.
